The Ashes

The Ashes is one of the most famous series in international cricket and was first held in 1882. Its name comes from a satirical obituary published in The Sporting Times, which stated that English cricket had died and its body had been cremated. This in turn made English captain Ivo Bligh vow to "regain those ashes" and the following series dubbed in British media as the quest to regain the Ashes.
